The MDNX project for Berkshire offices started with a large 2metre x 2metre painting for the reception area.

The MDNX logo is red white and black and the painting complemented the space and the logo. The image is also good in that it is based on "organic" form but is a complex painting with layers of curved lines sitting behind, laid over and peeking through areas of coloured space.

The painting sends you on a journey, gets you "connected" whilst making a bold statement of contemporary/modern style - which perfectly illustrates MDNX - which is a great company and has lovely friendly, outgoing and charming staff!!

The painting is called "Complexity of Motion"

art for offices

The MDNX building is lovely and light and airy. On the 1st floor are meeting rooms and offices.

There is a great corridor and wall - so four paintings were created based on the:

"People, Games and Work" series of paintings by Caroline Hulse FRSA

The colours of the MDNX logo - red white and black are the focal point of the single painting of the four piece. The paintings were kept in the essence of "fun" - with cheerful pastel colours, contemporary form and curved joining lines.

The aim of the paintings was to make people smile and make a great entrance to staff coming into work. Or clients visiting the space and appreciating the sense of welcome, and originality of MDNX

Each of the three paintings on the corridor wall are a continuation of the single "People, Games and Work"

Each image a juxtoposition of the previous.

The paintings can be viewed from the meeting rooms - so this had to taken into consideration when designing the images.

The "Rest Area" is great furniture with crisp lines and modern colour, so Caroline designed a new range of paintings which had simple form - to keep the space feeling non cluttered.

It was important to have large areas of coloured space complemented with small marks - to accentuate the "open" feel of the space.

Purple is a calming, "royal" colour and the complement of purple is yellow - so this was all balanced and brought together with black lines

The marks of the line on each painting represent a new form.

"Swing" - motion.

Alongside "Curve" - creation and

"Balance" - the single painting on a nearby wall which should bring in the vertical (Static) element to balance the other two paintings.

"Balance" - the single painting which complements the other two paintings in the same space.

The "Sales" area was complemented by a painting called: "Target Achieved"

The colours are specifically placed and the form is based on organic content.

Red is a sociable colour and should get you motivated, chatting and driven!

Green is for grounding and the yellow is always good for concentration. All complemented by the slight motion of the form should ensure motivation balanced with a feeling of relaxation (organic form).

Nicola had the brainwave of placing the five "seascape" paintings along a long open plan office wall.

Blue is a calm and popular colour and the "seascape" form is evident enough not to overwhelm but to form a continuation of space.

Thought you might like to know how the process starts to create "proper"!! paintings

Canvases are made with good quality stretchers and heavy weight canvas.

The canvas is stretched very taut over the stretchers - so that a great "drumming" noise can be made!!

If the canvas is not taut - the painting will sag - so very important to make a VERY good product at this stage!

Then 4 layers of gesso are put onto the canvas.

Each layer is left to dry then sanded down to make a smooth surface.

Then anothe layer of gesso put on. Gesso is a "primer" and ensures the fabric of the canvas will not break down, the gesso also prepares the canvas for the paint.

An undercoat is put onto the sanded gesso - in this case "Burnt Umber" - burnt umber is an "earth" colour and dries quicker than other colours.
